Creating Acrylic Awards since the early 90’s Newline knows acrylics. The Blue Acrylic Award has become a popular choice for many of our corporate clients, especially customers that have blue represented in their corporate brand. Tinted blue acrylics began showing up in the awards market shortly after the turn of the century and we have seen an increase in options available from vendors selling sheet stock acrylic and Lucite to suppliers creating unique awards out of blue materials. Blue acrylic is very similar in the way it is fabricated to clear but often used as an accent to clear acrylic to create stunning works of art.
Some have asked – where does the blue come from?
Since blue acrylic awards are primarily comprised of three different mediums, we will discuss each in detail below.
Extruded or cast, blue acrylic is a chemical process very similar to clear. A polycarbonate thermoplastic derived from natural-gas, acrylic is made by combining Methyl Methacrylate, referred to as (MMA) below with a catalyst. Usually an organic peroxide, the catalyst begins the chemical reaction but does not become a component of the Poly Methyl Methacrylate (PMMA) or acrylic. By adding a blue tint to the monomer, the result is a beautifully colored blue acrylic resin. A process called batch cell is common in the creation of blue acrylic sheets where a mold is made of glass on the top and bottom allowing for different thicknesses of cast acrylic sheets. The resin is poured into the mold, sealed and heated for a specific time and temperature to complete the chemical reaction.
Once the acrylic sheets are removed from the mold, they can be fabricated by cutting on a saw or more commonly in the awards industry laser cut and polishing to perfect the finish and prepared for laser engraving.
Blue Acrylic Mirrors
Many of our blue awards use blue acrylic mirror sheet stock in their design and fabrication. Available in 1/8” an 1/4” thicknesses blue mirror acrylic can be laser cut or fabricated on a saw in the same manner as traditional acrylic but have the added functionality of a reflective surface to catch light and highlight the award. Often used with magnets or cast in the bottom of acrylic awards to reflect light upward the blue mirrors give us a lot of design options to make our awards spectacular.
Blue Screen-Printed Acrylic
An art form in China since about 960 AD screen printing has revolutionized many manufacturing processes, including the awards industry. Many of our blue awards use screen-printed acrylic to add depth and engraving options to our awards. Often printed in reverse on crystal clear acrylic sheets you will find blue screen printing on engraved plaques and trophies alike. Newline masterfully uses state of the art lasers to reverse and front engraves screen printed acrylic to highlight corporate brands around the United States and Canada. Engraving on the back creates a frosted white appearance with depth and the front is sometimes deep engraved and color filled to add additional value. Since the artists at Newline know acrylic, we will make recommendations based on text requested and logos presented to create the finest awards. . .
